Centering Prayer

Centering prayer is a way of praying. It helps us center ourselves in our bodies so that we can hear God. It is a way of quieting our soul as we make room for the voice of God.

Psalm 46:10
“Be still and know that I am God…”

Let’s try this simple prayer.

Sit comfortably. Settle yourself with your feet flat on the floor and your arms in a comfortable position. Close your eyes. Be aware of your body. Maybe there is tightness in your muscles, or distracting thoughts that are filling your mind. Try to relax.

Now, take a few slow deep breaths in and out. Breathe in as you feel your chest rise and your rib cage expand. Now slowly exhale through your nose or exhale gently as if blowing out a candle. Do this a few times as you feel your muscles relax and your mind become less anxious.

This time, as you breathe in: Pray “Be still and know…”
As you exhale, breathe out: “that I am God.”

Repeat this several times.

After repeating this several times, let’s break down this verse as we pray.

Pray: Be still and know that I am God
Allow for some silence before going on.

Pray: Be still and know that I AM
Silence

Pray: Be still and know

Pray: Be still

Rest in the presence of God. Just be. Enjoy this sweet communion with the One who loves you. Allow His love to wash over you. Feel His embrace. Know you are not alone.

Optional: Journal about how you experienced this exercise.
