What to Expect

The Chapel at Western Theological Seminary features an "in the round" design, creating an informal yet intimate worship environment. The worship style is described as Reformed Anglican, emphasizing the centrality of the Word, incorporating historic Christian forms, allowing space for silence and contemplation, and fostering a higher liturgical expression while nurturing the creative liturgical life of the Pillar community.

We intend to partner with Community Action House, which is an effort that serves a meal every Sunday morning at the seminary to food-insecure members of the West Michigan community.

This is not an effort to “get” folks from the breakfast to attend a worship service but rather an opportunity for worshippers with Pillar at the Chapel to engage the wider community by “knowing a name, hearing a story and honoring a question.”

Training will be provided for those who intend to attend the breakfast as well as those who hope to volunteer to serve the breakfast.

Emily Hanrahan - recently received her Master of Divinity degree from Western Theological Seminary while leading worship at Pillar’s first Growing Small campus, Warehouse 6. At Pillar’s Western Chapel site she will be the primary leader of the worship ensemble as Resident Pastoral Musician and Admin.

One of the gifts that God is giving the Pillar community is the joy of growth: new families, new friends, new opportunities. In the midst of that growth, we want to remain a community where “your name is known, your story is heard and your questions are honored.”

Those two things, growth and connection, can sometimes be at odds with one another. So, in 2020, we launched an initiative we call “Growing Small” to guide us through growth in such a way that we stay true to who we are. Growing Small is a way to celebrate and steward growth and live into the kind of connected community we want to be. A few years ago we started a second site called Pillar at the Warehouse.

This fall we have started a third site in the chapel at Western Theological Seminary. We intend to partner with Community Action House, which is an effort that serves a meal every Sunday

Pillar is responding to the growth we are experiencing with a vision called "Growing Small." At the center of this vision is our desire to be a place where we know each other's names, hear each other's stories, and honor each other's questions.

We are launching this new worshiping community at Western Seminary to provide a new and unique way to grow small. Our worship will be adjacent to the outreach breakfast of Community Action House at Western Seminary.

We are committed to provide volunteers each week to serve at the breakfast, and to be good neighbors to the community that gathers for the breakfast. The worship will fit the chapel space in a "creative liturgical" way.
