The Book of Hebrews is one of the New Testament texts that offers deep insights into the Christian faith, focusing significantly on the person and work of Jesus Christ. The main purpose of the book is to present Jesus as the ultimate fulfillment of the Old Testament, highlighting His superiority over angels, Moses, and the Levitical priesthood. This theme of superiority encourages believers facing persecution and challenges to maintain their faith and commitment to Christ.
The author of Hebrews, whose identity remains a topic of debate among scholars, writes to Jewish Christians who were likely experiencing doubts, persecutions, or temptations to revert back to old covenant practices. The context suggests that these believers were struggling to comprehend how their faith in Christ fit within the rich history of their Jewish heritage, and whether it was worth enduring hardship. There are important lessons here for contemporary Christians who must distinguish between wallowing in a stagnant ritualized faith, and a dynamic walk in the footsteps of Jesus. The letter systematically argues that Jesus is greater than all that came before Him and that faith in Him is what guarantees both salvation and fulfillment.
